'Taking my contraceptive pill nearly killed me'

A 26-year-old woman collapsed at work from a stroke after taking a new contraceptive pill prescribed by her doctor.

Holly McComish developed a blood clot just two months after she started taking a combined contraceptive pill. She is now campaigning against the long-standing attitude of 'just give the pill a try and see how you get on' given the devastating effects it can have on women's health.

Holly, who works as a theatre producer in London, collapsed during a business meeting in October 2021 just weeks after being prescribed oral contraceptive Microgynon 30 over the telephone. She was rushed to A&E by ambulance where doctors later found a blood clot had travelled to her brain via an undiagnosed hole in her heart.
