Takeaway and butchers slapped with poor hygiene ratings

Urgent and major improvement is required at a Liverpool butchers and convenience shop according to hygiene experts.

A damning report has been handed down to Kboi on Limekiln Lane, after Liverpool Council environmental health officers visited the premises last month. Information made public by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) does not make for pleasant reading for the business, which according to its Facebook page is a family-run business whose “only vision that is serve the best”.

The Vauxhall-based business is permitted to provide wholesale wine, beer, spirits and other alcoholic beverages and retail sale of meat and meat products in specialised stores as per listings on the UK Government website listing its filing history. However, the FSA has said urgent improvement is necessary in terms of its hygienic food handling, including handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.

While the premises is said to be generally satisfactory by way of its cleanliness and condition, further failings were identified in the management of food safety, such as the system or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future. The findings said major improvements were necessary in this regard.

A similar rating was handed out to a West Derby takeaway visited by inspectors just 24 hours previous to Kboi. Scoring one out of five, Gr8 pizza and golden wok was also urged to make major improvements quickly.

The West Derby Road takeaway, like Kboi, was found lacking in the management of food safety and hygienic food handling. Its cleanliness was deemed to be generally satisfactory as per the publicly available report.

Its website describes its dishes as “a work of art for its aesthetic value”. Both venues can appeal the ratings handed down by the Food Standards Agency and are offered the right of reply to inspectors.

The takeaway and butchers can also apply for a reinspection following the visit by local authority officers last month. The ECHO approached both Kboi and Gr8 pizza and golden wok for comment.
