Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, has quietly, but aggressively, begun the hunt for the person or persons leaking GTA 6 under the alias “Cyberleek”.
On August 20, through the Southern District Court of New York, Take-Two filed multiple subpoenas to get information out of both Microsoft and Discord that might help them track down the leaker. The entire situation began a few days ago when an anonymous account began posting clips of Grand Theft Auto 6 while demanding a response from Rockstar Games about gamer’s rights (and conveniently making money off of their advertised crypto currency).
Take-Two begins the hunt through federal court
Through the subpoenas filed through the federal courts, Take-Two has petitioned Microsoft and Discord for records of accounts connected to the leaks. Both companies have until September 4 to hand over the information, which still gives the Cyberleek account time to do plenty of damage to GTA 6‘s secrecy in the meantime. As reported by Kotaku, the subpoena reads:
““The copyrighted material includes but is not limited to audiovisual content, artwork, images, dialogue, or other creative elements. Take-Two, through its counsel of record, has submitted a sworn declaration confirming that the purpose for which the DMCA subpoena is sought is to obtain the identity of an alleged infringer or infringers, and that such information will only be used for the purpose of protecting Take-Two’s rights…”
The petition to Microsoft specifically mentions data for OneDrive and Xbox accounts, as it reads:
“All identifying information associated with all user accounts that are/were members communicating with the Discord server(s) listed below during the time period from June 1, 2026 to present; and for those accounts, provide any associated device/telemetry records where one or more of the tool/file artifacts below were present on the system. For each returned account, provide: the account ID, registration email, registration and last-login IP addresses, phone number, linked connections (Google/Xbox/etc.), any associated device identifiers (MachineGuid/MSA), and content related to Grand Theft Auto (‘GTA’), Rockstar or Cyberleek from their OneDrive account.”
For Discord, some specific servers are being combed for information regarding Cyberleek, as their own subpoena reads:
“All user accounts that are/were members communicating with the Discord server(s)” that involve “CYBERLEEK,” “CINEMATICROCKSTAR,” and “Surfer24k™ (+ replacement handles cyberleek_west, surwest),” as well as “Ødyssey.gg,” “‘! Odyssey’ public brand guild (discord.gg/odyssey),” and “DarkViperAU editors’ server (discord.gg/darkviperau).”
Rockstar’s silence makes sense
With these legal means now clear to the public, it makes sense why Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive have been completely silent about the Cyberleek situation. Rather than engage with the hacker, the companies went directly for legal means to take them down, which is something they have experience with.
With past leakers receiving significant punishment for past GTA 6 leaks, Cyberleek is likely facing down a similar fate if/when caught. Since the scope of the current rash of leaks is arguably far worse than anything seen before (recent posts from the leaker imply they have access to a full kit rather than a series of limited, stolen videos), Take-Two will want the legal hammer to come down hard.
Grand Theft Auto 6 comes out November 19, with an official extended look through Netflix on August 27.
