Taj Mahal, one of the most famous landmarks in India, both historically as well as for tourism purposes has been in news for a number of reasons recently. Most recently, the beautiful white-marble structure has been in the news as a petition was made to open the "locked rooms" in the premises and conduct an investigation to ascertain presence of idols of Hindu deities. The petition stands dismissed by Lucknow High Court.
While the petitioner, Mr Rajneesh Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) media in-charge of Ayodhya district, seeks to approach the Supreme Court, the Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) has released photos of some of the said "closed rooms". These photos are in public domain and can be accessed by all. ASI officials have also stated that the rooms below the main structure of Taj Mahal are not always locked, and “various records and reports reviewed till now have not shown the existence of any (Hindu) idols”.
