Taiwo Awoniyi injury update provided as Nottingham Forest prepare to face Man City

Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is "progressing well" in his recovery from injury, but head coach Steve Cooper says there is still no indication when he will be available again.

The 25-year-old has been sidelined since the start of last month, after being forced off in the 1-0 victory over Southampton. Awoniyi scored the Reds' winner in that game, but was substituted with 20 minutes to go due to a groin problem.

He is among a number of Forest players currently out of action as Cooper contends with an extensive absentee list. But earlier this week the forward posted footage on social media of himself doing rehabilitation work at the Nigel Doughty Academy, captioning it: "Steps by steps."

"He’s doing alright. He’s progressing, slowly," Cooper said of Awoniyi, ahead of Saturday's clash with Manchester City.

"I can’t give you a date on Taiwo, but I know he’s progressing really well. Cheikhou (Kouyate) is as well.

"Omar (Richards), Moussa (Niakhate)... they’re all working well. We're working strongly with them. They are all at different stages of their recovery. Maybe in a couple of weeks I'll have a bit more information on Taiwo."

Defenders Scott McKenna and Willy Boly added to the Reds' injury woes this week. The pair were forced off after just seven minutes of last weekend's defeat at Fulham with hamstring problems.

McKenna is expected to be missing for about six weeks, while Boly may not feature again this season as he faces a three-month lay-off. Forest have applied to the Premier League to have Steve Cook take Boly's place in their 25-man squad, and expect to receive a verdict tomorrow, ahead of taking on City.

Cooper has ruled Ryan Yates (illness) out of the match at the City Ground, while Jesse Lingard (Achilles' and knee) is a doubt. Kouyate (hamstring), Richards (hairline fracture of the leg), Niakhate (hamstring), Dean Henderson (thigh) and Giulian Biancone (ACL) are all sidelined.
