Taiwan's diplomatic alliance threatened as Nauru switches allegiance to China

Taiwan condemns China after Nauru switches diplomatic allegiance.

Taiwan is facing condemnation from China as its former ally, Nauru, announced its decision to switch diplomatic allegiance to Beijing. This action comes after Taiwan held legislative and presidential elections last year, which have drawn strong condemnation from the Chinese government. However, the United States has assured that its relations with Taiwan remain 'rock solid.' In a show of unity, an unofficial U.S. delegation is currently in Taiwan after the ruling party secured its historic third consecutive presidential term.

The delegation, consisting of former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg and former National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley, arrived on Sunday. They were welcomed by Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and later had a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen. During the meeting, the delegation congratulated Taiwan on its electoral process and emphasized the strong partnership between the United States and Taiwan.

China had warned against any official contact with Taiwan and reiterated its position that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. Following the election on Saturday, Taiwan's ruling party achieved a historic third consecutive presidential victory. President-elect Lai Ching-kei, who is openly detested by China, stated that he would seek peace through strength and remain open to engagement with Beijing. However, China has denounced Lai's statements as separatist.

In another diplomatic blow to Taiwan, Nauru announced on Monday that it was severing diplomatic ties with Taiwan and recognizing Beijing instead. This decision leaves Taiwan with only 12 remaining diplomatic allies. China's Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, reiterated China's position that there is only 'one China' and Taiwan is part of it. China's diplomats condemned foreign governments that congratulated the ruling party and President-elect Lai after the election.

China has been employing various tactics, including military actions, trade pressure, and diplomatic isolation, to assert its claim over Taiwan. With Lai Ching-kei now in power, who is openly disliked by China, it is expected that China will increase its efforts to exert pressure on Taiwan.

The situation between Taiwan and China remains tense, with Taiwan seeking to maintain its independence and democracy, while China continues to assert its authority over the region. The support of the United States is crucial for Taiwan in maintaining its diplomatic position and countering China's influence.
