Taiwan Racing To Develop Own Satellite System Amid Rising Tensions

A Starlink satellite internet system is set up near the frontline town of Bakhmut

China has recently displayed a significant show of force by surrounding Taiwan with numerous fighter jets and warships. This demonstration of power is reportedly in response to Taiwan swearing in a new president. The Chinese government has issued warnings to any separatist forces advocating for Taiwan's independence, emphasizing the inevitability of China's complete reunification.

Taiwan, in response to the looming threat of a potential full-scale Chinese invasion, has begun bolstering its defenses. One critical aspect of Taiwan's vulnerability lies in its undersea internet cables, which are considered fragile and susceptible to Chinese attacks. These fifteen undersea cables serve as vital strategic assets and potential military targets. Severing these cables could result in a complete internet blackout for the 24 million people residing in Taiwan, leaving the island democracy exposed.

While Elon Musk's Starlink satellite system has been instrumental in providing high-speed internet connectivity in conflict zones like Ukraine and Gaza, Taiwan has expressed concerns about relying on this technology due to Musk's business ties with China. In response to these concerns, Taiwan is investing billions in developing and launching its own low-orbit communication satellites to ensure uninterrupted internet connectivity, especially during times of crisis.

Taiwan's space program, led by Wu Zongxin, director-general of TASA (Taiwan's space agency), aims to enhance the country's communication resilience. The urgency of this initiative is underscored by a recent incident on Taiwan's Matsu Islands, where Chinese ships were accused of severing underwater cables, leading to a communication blackout. Taiwan is collaborating with NASA to accelerate its space program and counter the escalating threats posed by China's advancements in space technology.

The ongoing military drills around Taiwan highlight the critical nature of Taiwan's space race. The potential disruption of internet cables by warships poses a significant risk to Taiwan's communication infrastructure, potentially paving the way for a blockade or invasion. As tensions between China and Taiwan continue to rise, the development of Taiwan's own satellite communication system becomes increasingly imperative to safeguard its digital connectivity and national security.
