Rescue workers in Taiwan are currently engaged in a challenging operation to locate and save over 100 individuals who are still trapped following the powerful earthquake that struck the island. The earthquake, the strongest in 25 years, has resulted in a death toll of nine people, with 1,050 individuals sustaining injuries and 101 individuals remaining stranded.
According to the National Fire Agency, there are 46 individuals who are still missing or unable to be contacted. Additionally, 961 people have been evacuated, with 628 seeking refuge in shelters. In the city of Hualien, search and rescue efforts are in progress. Lin Chih-cheng from the Professional Civil Engineers Association mentioned that 100 buildings have been deemed unsafe and will likely need to be demolished.
There was a successful rescue mission involving six miners who were trapped in an open pit quarry. A video released by the National Fire Agency captured the helicopter operation that led to their safe extraction. Furthermore, the Hualien Fire Bureau reported that 11 tourists, including three foreign nationals, were rescued from Taroko Gorge National Park, a popular tourist spot near the earthquake's epicenter.
