A powerful earthquake struck Taiwan on Wednesday morning, causing the collapse of at least 26 buildings, as reported by Taiwan's Central Emergency Command Center (CEOC). Among the collapsed buildings, 15 were in Hualien County near the epicenter of the quake.
CEOC has confirmed that there are people trapped in seven of the collapsed buildings, leading to a challenging rescue operation. Efforts are underway to reach and rescue those individuals as quickly as possible.
In addition to the structural damage, the earthquake has disrupted power supplies on the island. Over 91,000 households are currently without electricity, with the state-operated Taipower Company actively working to restore power to affected areas.
Furthermore, the earthquake has impacted transportation services in eastern Taiwan, resulting in the suspension of some train services. However, authorities are optimistic that these services will be operational again by the end of the day, minimizing disruptions for commuters and travelers.
The situation in Taiwan remains fluid as emergency response teams continue their rescue and recovery efforts in the aftermath of this devastating earthquake. Our thoughts are with those affected by this natural disaster, and we hope for a swift and successful rescue operation to save lives and restore normalcy in the affected areas.
