Sylvester Stallone's '80s Living Room is a Compendium on Updating Classic Ranch Style for Modern Living

Classic ranch style is a staple of the American West – but it can also be a touch dark and rustic for contemporary interiors. In 2026, homeowners are tempering traditional details like cowhide rugs, leather furniture, and geometric patterned rugs with lighter, brighter accents.

Long before this modern farmhouse twist on ranch style emerged as an interior design trend, Sylvester Stallone had already struck the perfect balance.

Archival images of the actor's living room from 1991 show a white painted, glass-paneled take on ranch style. It's full of bright accents, mid-century modern furniture, and grounded by quintessentially Western details. If you're searching for the ideal blend of contemporary and classic ranch style, his Hidden Valley, California, home is a great place to start.

To extract the lessons found in Sylvester's gorgeous home, Homes & Gardens started by curating an edit of the modern pieces we'd use to recreate his 1980s look. We also spoke with interior designers on how they see this new twist on ranch style playing out, and how to replicate it in any home.

Recreate Sylvester's Look at Home

Low-Lift Addition

Adding a tree to an indoor space automatically makes it feel more airy and free. The fiddle-leaf fig is a top pick among those in the know, and this gorgeous hardy one comes at a great price.

Oil Painting

A colorful piece of artwork is the perfect way to lift the eye up, and create a fun energy in your ranch-style living room. This affordable oil painting is a great place to start.

Classic with a Twist

Like we see in Sylvester's living room, this red Western rug adds a hint of classic ranch style while keeping it a bit more fun and whimsical for modern elegance.

On-Trend Fluting

A fluted table lamp is an easy way to add texture and warmth to a living room, and this paper design is a particularly stylish choice. It casts a soft, ambient glow that's perfect for cozy evenings or entertaining friends well into the night.

Stunning Accent

Sylvester Stallone uses a curved blue chair to bring interest to his living room, and these pretty fabric ones are the ergonomic way to do the same. They would pair gorgeously with a glass table.

Stainless Steel Legs

Glass dining tables are a wonderful way to bring lightness to your living room, and this rectangular one has stainless steel legs for a true mid-century look. I love the idea of pairing it with a blue chair like we see in Sylvester's home.

Designers are referring to this new, luxe twist on traditional ranch style as 'rich ranch.' What exactly are the tenets of this look?

Interior designer Nina Lichtenstein explains: 'The Rich Ranch trend began gaining traction in the late 2010s and solidified itself in the early 2020s, coinciding with a broader interest in biophilic design and sustainability. It was influenced by the rise of modern farmhouse styles but offers a more sophisticated, nature-driven alternative.'

She continues: 'The Rich Ranch trend is a harmonious blend of rustic authenticity and elevated design. It caters to those who value comfort and connection but don’t want to sacrifice style. Whether you’re designing a full ranch estate or simply infusing a room with ranch-inspired details, this trend is all about creating a space that feels warm, luxurious, and uniquely yours.'

As Sylvester's home demonstrates, the key to making this look work is through contrast. In his ranch living room, the combination of a classic Western rug with a glass dining table creates a stunning effect, but there are dozens of ways to invite this equilibrium. Nina advises: 'Balance the ruggedness with luxe details like velvet throw pillows, cashmere blankets, or polished stone tabletops.'

Furniture should also be a substantial focus when tapping into the modern ranch trend.

Nina recommends that readers 'opt for substantial, comfortable pieces like oversized leather sectionals, upholstered armchairs, and large wood dining tables with clean lines.'
