Sydney Sweeney is bolstering her casting sheet as it has been announced that the Euphoria actress will star in and executive produce a new Barbarella reboot.
Although surely no one can truly replace Jane Fonda’s “five-star, double-rated astronavigatrix Earth girl” in the original, directed by her husband Roger Vadim, Sweeney has apparently agreed to don the iconic chainmail mini dress.
Sweeney seemed to confirm this with an Instagram post on Tuesday (Oct 11) of the original artwork captioned: “Time to save the universe.”
The 1968 film was based on a French comic series of the same name by Jean-Claude Forest, with groovy adventures for the titular character, who chased the villain Durand Durand across the universe.
The film, which featured corny 60s costumes and sets, gained a cult following despite being a box office flop.
However, details about the remake may be jumping the gun as the film is still in its early stages, with no director or writer currently announced. This is also not the first time a remake has been mooted.
In the 2000s, American filmmaker Robert Rodriguez announced plans for a new Barbarella, but eventually dispensed with the expensive idea.
Amazon then picked up the premise for TV in 2012, but director Nicolas Winding Refn decided to focus on other projects.
Speaking to The Playlist, Refn said: “I don’t own Barbarella, the estate does. Plus there are other television things that caught my attention.
“I actually enjoyed designing it from the beginning. […] Certain things are better left untouched. You don’t need to remake everything.”
Sweeney seems trusting of the Sony Pictures stamp, though, as she is also attached to the Marvel flick Madame Web alongside Dakota Johnson and The Registration, for which the studio landed rights.
So, along with all her other projects, it may be a long time until we see Sweeney don a pair of go-go boots – at least for this role.
