Sydney Sweeney confirms role in Spider-Woman story Madame Web: here’s everything we know

Many fans of superhero films are complaining of fatigue with the genre, but Sony’s Madame Web hopes to break the mould.

The film will feature an all-star cast, now confirmed to star Euphoria’s Sydney Sweeney, and tell the story of Spider-Woman.

Dakota Johnson will take the titular role in an ensemble cast that also includes characters from the Spider-Man comics.

Sweeney, who spoke to ES Magazine earlier this year, will play Julia Carpenter, who goes on to become Spider-Woman in the comics.

“I think it’s different from what people expect a superhero movie to be,” Sweeney told Variety. “Quote that! That’s a quote, because the tabloids will pick up everything else we talk about.”

Here’s what we know about the film so far, including the rest of the all-star cast.

Madame Web release date

Madame Web will premiere in February, 2024, with filming taking place across five months at some point this year.

This is dependent on the SAG-AFTRA strikes currently at play in Hollywood, which could cause delays that would impact the film’s release.

Madame Web plot

It has been suggested by Collider that Madame Web would intersect with the ever-expanding Sony-verse, possibly including characters from Venom or Morbius.

Other than that, there’s little word on what the plot will focus on — or whether it could interact with the MCU. When asked directly by Variety if her Spider-Woman could enter the MCU, Sweeney merely said yes, it could, and moved on.

Until we get an official trailer, we won’t know much more about the content of Madame Web.

Madame Web cast

However, we do have a few more confirmed cast members alongside Johnson and Sweeney.

These include Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet, in undisclosed roles.

Behind the camera, Jessica Jones’s S J Clarkson will direct Madame Web, with the screenplay co-written between Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama.
