Switzerland started with a 1-1 draw against Qatar but bounced back strongly, beating Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-1 and Canada 2-1 to finish top of Group B and enter the knockouts in solid form. Algeria had a tougher route, losing 3-0 to Argentina before recovering with a 2-1 win over Jordan. A 3-3 draw against Austria in their final group match helped them qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
