The Switzerland Euro 2024 squad proved their quality in the last 16 of the tournament - and face another opportunity to cause an upset in the quarter-finals.
Murat Yakin's men got their Euro 2024 tournament off to an impressive start when they swept aside Hungary 3-1 in Cologne, before following that up with a 1-1 draw against Scotland. And while they needed just a point against Germany to reach the last 16, Switzerland looked like taking all three to top Group A as they led 1-0 heading into stoppage time.
Niclas Fullkrug, though, spared Germany's blushes, netting a 92nd minute equaliser to ensure Switzerland remained in second place. As a result, they faced European Championship holder Italy in the last 16, though they needn't have worried. 90 minutes and two goals later, and the Swiss may well have been in a spa they looked that comfortable. Barely getting out of third gear, they swept aside a poor Azzurri side in confident fashion, extending their unbeaten tournament display.
Their quarter-final opponents, England, are also unbeaten in the opening four games of Euro 2024, too, though Gareth Southgate's side have been far less convincing. Switzerland will quietly fancy their chances against the favourites, with their 'Golden Generation' wanting to make the most of what is likely their final tournament together.
Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri, Remo Freuler, Ricardo Rodriguez and Yann Sommer are all still going strong, proving their quality in the last 16 and ready for another upset. On the precipice of the semi-finals, the Netherlands or Turkey would be waiting for the Swiss if they find a way past the Three Lions - meaning a spot in the final is certainly a possibility.

Switzerland manager: Murat Yakin
Soon after Switzerland's lacklustre qualifying campaign ended, the FA issued a statement saying "Murat Yakin has our full confidence", which you shouldn't have to say if It's true. Vladimir Petkovic elevated expectations thanks to the most successful tenure in Swiss football history, so Yakin, in charge since 20/21, needed a strong showing here.
He's duly delivered. Can it continue?
Switzerland's star player
Granit Xhaka
At times while at Arsenal, Granit Xhaka polarised his audience with a hot temper, rash attitude and occasional moments of brilliance: at international level, however, he's been nothing short of one of the best midfielders in the world.
Xhaka is in his renaissance at Bayer Leverkusen and at 31, he's his country's leader and biggest big-game player. At the last Euros, he was the decisive factor against France, almost dragging the Swiss through to the quarter-finals: with an exquisite passing range and a rocket of a long shot, he's one of the most watchable players in Europe when he's on song.
