Switching off to save cash might cost you more in the long run

Hard-up housdeholds looking to save cash have been turning to the internet for advice on how to save energy - but users of online forums and social media are not always best placed to advise, experts have warned.

And although the 'tips' are mainly well-intentioned, trying to cut back on energy use by turning off certain appliances could actually end up costing you more money in the long run. One council has even issued a warning after hearing that some of its residents have been turning off their fridges to save money amid the cost of living crisis.

Cornwall County Council has urged families not to risk food poisoning by turning their fridge freezers off, after reports from local food banks that desperate families were doing just that to save power. Fridge freezers are undoubtedly one of the most energy-guzzling appliances in your home as it's on 24/7, 365 days a year. But it can't be switched off off unless it's empty and you're going away.
