Switch 2 and Mario movie send Nintendo profits soaring by 54%

Nintendo's net profit surged 53.5% in the April-June quarter, as strong demand for its Switch 2 console and the global success of the Super Mario movie boosted the Japanese games company's bottom line.

Nintendo posted a net profit of 147.4 billion yen (€810mn) for the quarter, up from 96 billion yen (€530mn) a year earlier.

Quarterly sales fell 9.5% to 517.8 billion yen (€2.8bn).

US President Donald Trump's tariffs weighed on the results, the company said, along with rising prices for memory chips and other components.

Nintendo is forecasting a net profit of 310 billion yen (€1.7bn) for the financial year to March 2027, down nearly 27% on the previous year. Annual sales are expected to slip 11% to 2.05 trillion yen (€11.3bn).

Switch 2 keeps up the pace

Nintendo sold 3.82 million Switch 2 consoles worldwide during the quarter. Sales of the older Switch also held up, with both hardware and software continuing to sell alongside the newer machine.

Switch 2 software sales totalled 9.46 million units in the quarter, led by Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, released in May, and Pokémon Pokopia, which came out last year.

More releases on the way

Nintendo hopes to build on the momentum with new titles, including Splatoon Raiders, released last month, and an upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

The company expects to sell 16.5 million Switch 2 consoles this financial year, down nearly 17% on the previous year, with console sales typically slowing after a strong launch year. Software sales are forecast to rise 23% to 60 million units.

Nintendo shares rose 2.9% in Tokyo trading after the results were announced.
