Swiggy Instamart witnesses Ganesh Chaturthi rush: 176% more eco-Ganpatis, 145% more mawa modaks compared to last year

Ganesh Chaturthi, celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Ganesha, was observed on September 14 this year, with devotees bringing home idols, preparing traditional offerings and arranging puja essentials. According to data shared by Instamart in a press release, the festival saw increased demand for eco-friendly Ganpati idols and mawa-flavoured modaks, while flowers recorded the highest order activity during the morning.

Instamart said eco-friendly clay Ganpati idols emerged as its fastest-growing festive category, with demand increasing 176% year-on-year. Mawa-flavoured modaks also recorded a 145% rise and were the most-ordered modak variety on the platform during the festival.

Bengaluru recorded the highest volume of festive orders, followed by Mumbai, Hyderabad and Chennai. Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, Gurgaon and Kochi were among the other cities recording significant festive orders, according to the company.

Eco-friendly Ganpati demand rises

Instamart said ready-to-place clay idols accounted for 90% of demand for eco-friendly Ganpatis, followed by paint-your-own eco idols.

The company reported particularly sharp increases in demand in cities outside the traditional heartlands of Ganesh Chaturthi. Eco-Ganpati orders rose 1,718% in Delhi, 1,305% in Kolkata, 1,136% in Noida and 1,132% in Bhubaneswar, according to the press release.

Mawa modaks lead festive demand

Mawa emerged as the most-ordered modak flavour on Instamart, followed by classic, kesar, kaju, assorted and amba, or mango, varieties.

Preferences varied across cities. Mawa was the leading choice in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Hyderabad, while kesar was more popular in Delhi and Gurgaon. Classic modaks led in Pune, Chennai, Kolkata and Nagpur, while kaju was the top choice in Central Goa, according to Instamart's data.

Flowers peak at 868 orders a minute

Instamart said flower orders peaked at 7:42 am on September 14, reaching 868 orders a minute. Eco-friendly clay idol orders reached their highest level at 8:48 am, as families brought Ganpati idols home.

Orders for puja essentials, including camphor, cotton wicks and agarbatti, peaked at 9:45 am. Modak orders reached their peak at 10:39 am, with mawa leading the demand, followed by kesar and classic varieties.
