Sweet moment Leeds couple marry in hospital as wife's voice comes back after brain surgery so she could say 'I do'

A Leeds couple turned a Yorkshire hospital into their dream wedding venue.

Couple Darren and Michelle Norbury are officially husband and wife after they said 'I do' in Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield on Thursday (June 16). Michelle boasted a flamboyant wedding dress, and Darren wore a smart patterned suit and pink tie, while they sat in a hospital ward.

They were surrounded by pink and white balloons, bright flowers, cards, and a large wedding cake. The couple's magical day comes after a difficult time for Michelle, who wasn't sure if she'd be able to say the words 'I do' on her big day.

Michelle had a meningioma excision in 2021 - a brain surgery involving making an incision in the scalp and removing a piece of bone from the skull. The surgery left her needing tracheostomy ventilation in her throat, subsequently leaving her without a voice.

The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said Michelle needed to remain in their care until she regained her independence to be cared for at home. She joined the trust from Leeds in April of this year when she was unable to speak to due being on her ventilator permanently.

A spokesperson for the trust said: "Michelle was understandably nervous when she first moved to our Trust, meeting a new team of carers can be daunting. But she quickly became part of the family."

The trust added that after Michelle was put through a recovery plan, she has since regained her voice. It came back just in time for when partner Darren proposed to her back in May, and she was able to say 'yes' to becoming his future wife.

But as Michelle remains in hospital, the couple were unable to take her home for a ceremony. Instead, they turned her new home into her dream wedding venue.

A spokesperson at the hospital added: "As soon as everyone on Gate 27 heard the news the wedding bells were ringing and the team sprung in to full wedding planning mode, helping Michelle pick a beautiful dress, arranging bunting, flowers and cake.

"On Wednesday they threw Michelle a surprise hen party and today there wasn’t a dry eye in the room during the ceremony. It’s moments like this that make our jobs extra special."

The ceremony reportedly left staff at the hospital in "high spirits" and the couple were photographed smiling together as husband and wife. A number of people shared their congratulations to the couple on social media.

Joyce Hinchcliffe said: "Congratulations Mr and Mrs Norbury so nice Enjoy your Special day. Xxxx" Fiona Butler added: "Congratulations to you both, and wishing you a speedy recovery. Xx"

Steve Barker said: "Many congratulations to you both...and well done Pinderfields for being a big part and host to wedding." And, Sue Dunnington said: "Congratulations to you both. I sure do hope you make a full recovery and be home with your loving husband."
