Swansea City transfer news as Southampton stand-off over Russell Martin rumbles on and Rangers 'open talks' on Whittaker

Here's your round-up of all the latest Swansea City news for Monday, June 5.

Martin exit still in limbo

Swansea City and Southampton are still yet to come to an agreement on a compensation package for Russell Martin.

The Swans boss has one year left on his current deal at the Swansea.com Stadium, but is understood to have already agreed to take the top job at St Mary's.

However, a disagreement over compensation has held up the move going through.

Martin has two figures for compensation written into the terms of his contract. One applies for Premier League clubs, which is understood to be around £1.75m, and the other for Championship clubs, which stands at around £1.25m.

Swansea are seemingly claiming they are entitled to the higher fee, as the approach for their manager was initially made while Southampton were still in the Premier League. However, the Saints clearly dispute this stance given their recent relegation.

There's since been a suggestion Southampton may now be ready to wait until their status as a Championship club is officially confirmed.

That could see the saga drag on for a few more days, with EFL chiefs set to meet this week as part of the league's AGM to discuss several issues, including potential regulation changes, and indeed the 'transfer of membership' of clubs from the National League and the Premier League.

Rangers 'in talks' for Whittaker

Rangers are set to step up their interest in Swansea City forward Morgan Whittaker having reportedly opened talks over a move to Ibrox.

Whittaker has been on the radar of boss Michael Beale for some time, with the Scottish giants previously having several approaches turned down back in January.

However, there's a suggestion the Gers are poised to revive their interest this summer, with the Daily Record suggesting talks over a potential transfer have already begun.

Whittaker spent the first half of last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle, and proved a huge hit with the Pilgrims, netting nine goals and seven assists in 25 games.

However, he barely featured for Swansea when he was recalled in January, and his future remains uncertain in SA1.

Martin backed for Southampton success

Andrew Surman has backed his former boss Russell Martin to be a success at Southampton, but admits the current Swansea City manager may need time to get it right at St Mary's.

Surman played with Martin at Norwich City, and worked with him again when the 37-year-old was starting his managerial journey at MK Dons back in the 2020/21 season.

And the former midfielder insists he's confident the outgoing Swans boss has the tools to lead Southampton's charge next season.

However, he's wonders whether Martin will be given the time to lay down his philosophies at St Mary's.

Speaking to BBC Radio Solent, he said: “I played with him at Norwich as well, and was quite interested to see how much he had changed.

"He's very good with the players, he'll give them a lot of confidence and the way he wants to play, you need a lot of confidence.

“They will have a lot of ball on the edge of the box, it will be risky too. I think he will be really good, but he needs time and you don't get a lot of that in football.

“He was really good for my game. Where I was at in my career, he told me to get on the ball and make as many passes as possible.

“It's well documented that when he was at MK Dons, and at Swansea as well, you know you'll get 70 per cent possession. And people will argue that it's fine having possession but if you're not going anywhere with it, it doesn't really matter.

“He's building something in his own way and for his own managerial career, and developing his teams every year.

“What you'll find, you'll get total possession, they will have a lot of the ball but whether they can turn that into wins is a different story.”

Carvalhal linked with Leeds

Former Swansea City boss Carlos Carvalhal has been linked with the vacant head coach role at Leeds United this summer.

The 57-year-old is currently in charge of Spanish side Celta Vigo, but has always been vocal in his enthusiasm to return to English football after leaving the Swans back in 2018.

According to Alan Nixon he could now be in the frame to take over at Elland Road, with the same report claiming Sam Allardyce is keen to remain at Leeds as a general manager or director of football.
