Swansea City transfer news as club targeted Aston Villa and Man City stars and Andre Ayew jets in

The latest Swansea City transfer news coming out of the Swansea.com Stadium and beyond.

Names of targets revealed

It was yet another poor January transfer window for Swansea. Six players left and no new signings arrived, with only Morgan Whittaker returning to the fold after his recall from Plymouth Argyle.

And it seems Swansea missed out on a number of targets over the course of the month.

Swansea writer Ian Mitchelmore has written an in-depth analysis of the club's attempts to strengthen during the window, which were seemingly rebuffed at every turn.

Names have been revealed; Hannes Wolf, who was successful here on loan last season, was wanted again but parent club Borussia Mönchengladbach did not want to him to leave this winter. Chiedozie Ogbene was obviously their number-one target but interest in Man City starlet Liam Delap, Aston Villa loan man Cameron Archer and Sorba Thomas was not widely known.

In the end no-one was brought in and Swansea head coach Russell Martin must make do until the end of the season.

Smith joins from Man City

Teenager Liam Smith has joined Swansea from Premier League giants Manchester City.

The 19-year-old Scottish midfielder will link up with Swansea's under-21s having signed a two-and-a-half year deal through to the end of June 2025.

“We are delighted to welcome Liam to Swansea City,” said academy manager Andy Goldie.

“He is an exciting and talented young player. He is dominant in one v one situations, is creative in the final third and has an impressive goal contribution rate at both academy and international youth level.

“His decision to join Swansea City highlights the strength of the pathway we have and the opportunity we provide young players.

“If Liam can maximise those moments, he’ll be an exciting prospect for us in the future.

“Also, I’d like to thank Jason Wilcox and his staff for their professionalism and support.

“They have been open to this opportunity for Liam from an early stage and have certainly made the process in bringing him to Swansea City a lot smoother.”

Ayew jets in

Free agent Andre Ayew is set to fly into the UK in the next 24 hours to thrash out a deal with Everton, report the Daily Mail.

Ayew, who was on Swansea's books for four years across two spells and almost dragged them back up to the Premier League single-handedly, terminated his contract with former club Al Sadd by mutual consent last week.

Teams on the continent and in the Premier League are now looking at him, with his former Swans boss Steve Cooper, now at Nottingham Forest, also said to be keen on the Ghana star.

The Mail report Ayew has been handed a "£2.5million golden handshake" to free him up to return the English top flight. Ayew’s expected switch to Everton is currently rated at 50/50, they state.

As a free agent, the 33-year-old can sign for a club at any time.

Free agents Swans could sign

Speaking of free agents, we've compiled a list of players who Swansea could sign immediately.

Following the disappointing nature of the window, which has left them short at right-back and in the goalkeeping department, the free-agent market could yet come into their reckoning.

An injury to keeper Andy Fisher could cause Swansea headaches, although the emergency loan market for goalkeepers would provide them with a safety net should they need it.

Still, having just one experienced stopper in the ranks following Steven Benda's season-ending injury at QPR, is a risky game.

A couple of keepers feature on this list of out-of-contract players.

Why Burnley didn't let Barnes go

Ashley Barnes was a player heavily linked with Swansea last month.

The veteran striker didn't seem like a natural fit for Martin's brand of football but interest in the 33-year-old remained. Swansea had been dealing with the Clarets over the Michael Obafemi deal but Barnes was independent of that.

The Athletic report that there was interest in Barnes but only in terms of a loan deal, which did not suit their wishes. The wrote: "Barnes was subject of interest from clubs, but discussions centred around a loan deal which did not appeal to Burnley or the player."
