Swansea City's move to sign Wolves' Ryan Giles on deadline day not sanctioned as three January deals collapse

Swansea City had the opportunity to sign Wolves' Ryan Giles on deadline day - but the move was not given the green light by the club's owners.

Giles had spent the first half of the season at Cardiff City on loan, impressing for the Bluebirds.

His form pushed his parent club to recall him but he failed to make an appearance for the Molineux club on his return.

Cardiff were hopeful of re-signing the youngster but with Wolves dragging their feet over a decision, Cardiff boss Steve Morison moved on to other targets.

A chance presented itself to Swansea but decision-makers didn't sanction the loan deal. Giles subsequently joined Blackburn on loan for the remainder of the 2021/22 campaign.

It was the third deal of the January window which fell down at the final hurdle.

A Swansea agreement for Brighton's Ryan Longman - who clinched a permanent move to Hull City on deadline day following a loan stint with the Tigers - also collapsed.

The move was all wrapped up but the deal was pulled at the 11th hour after a call from the US and Swansea's owners.

This came after Swansea's pursuit of MK Dons' Matt O'Riley also broke down over the finances.

It amounted to a frustrating January transfer window for Russell Martin, who missed out on bringing in another striker this month.

He did get over the line a left wingback in the shape of N athanael Ogbeta, but Swansea's squad looks thin heading into the second half of the season with Liam Walsh heading to Hull City on a temporary contract.
