Swansea City news as team ready for Watford test, youngster nominated for award and update on Cooper's Forest future

Here's your round-up of all the latest Swansea City headlines for Wednesday, October 5.

Gill expecting tough Hornets test

Matt Gill says Swansea City are expecting a tough test at Watford on Wednesday night, but reckons the increasing competition for places leaves them well placed to pick up points over the coming weeks.

The Swans head to Hertfordshire looking to continue a good run that has yielded 10 points from five games, while the Hornets are starting out under Slaven Bilic, with the new era beginning with a 4-0 win over Stoke City last weekend.

“The change of manager seems to be happening a lot to us recently, with the Stoke game we had Alex Neil’s first game in charge and now we have that here in terms of it being a first home game,” Gill said.

“Personnel wise they showed a few tweaks at the weekend and had a great result, a brilliant start. So, we know this is going to be a tough game regardless of the managerial change because of the squad they have got.

“I think it will be a really good game. We are in a good place. Competition for places is something we have tried to get since we came through the door 14 or 15 months ago.

“You want squad depth, but the key thing is competition and the way the lads have been playing has been great.

“That then raises the intensity in training, it creates competition for places and that’s where you want to be as coaching staff and as players."

Swans tipped for defeat

Sky Sports pundit David Prutton believes Watford will be too much for Swansea City at Vicarage Road.

In his prediction column, he's backed Watford for a 2-0 win over over Russell Martin's side.

He wrote: "That was a great start for Slaven Bilic and Watford on Sunday, as they put four goals past Stoke in a performance that really showed off their attacking potential. If they can keep that going they will be challenging the top two in no time.

“Swansea enjoyed an excellent late win at West Brom on Saturday, as they continued their recent climb up the table after a slow start this season. But if Watford look as strong as they did on Sunday then they should be too good.”

Whittaker nominated for award

Swansea City loanee Morgan Whittaker has been nominated for the Sky Bet League One player of the month.

Whittaker has netted three goals in the Pilgrims' last four games, netting the first goal at Derby County, as well as the winning goals against Oxford United and Ipswich Town.

He also provided an assist for Niall Ennis’s goal against Pompey, and his upturn in form has now been recognised.

The winners of the awards will be announced on Friday, 7 October.

Cooper set to stay at Forest

Steve Cooper is reportedly set to stay as Nottingham Forest’s head coach, with Filippo Giraldi to join as the new sporting director,

According to the Daily Telegraph, the decision has been made after boardroom talks on Wednesday.

Cooper will reportedly be given more time to turn Forest’s season around, and is expected to take charge of the Premier League game against Aston Villa on Monday night.

Forest were believed to be considering Cooper’s future after the 4-0 defeat at Leicester on Monday night, their fifth defeat in a row, which left them bottom of the table.

Rafael Benítez, the former Liverpool and Newcastle manager, had been touted as a potential replacement, but Cooper is set to be given the opportunity to get things right at the City Ground, having previously ended the club's 23-year wait for Premier League football.
