Sydney defender Tom McCartin has been charged with "staging'' after exaggerating contact from Hawthorn's Mabior Chol in a theatrical attempt to get a free kick reversed.

Chol, meanwhile, has been cleared of wrongdoing for a tackle on Sydney's Nick Blakey that forced his opponent's head into the MCG turf.

McCartin had given away a free kick and 50-metre penalty to Hawthorn's Jack Gunston on Thursday night when Chol gave him a one-handed push to the chest.

The Swans defender flopped to the ground and was later charged by the AFL match review officer for "staging''.

McCartin can accept a $1000 fine with an early guilty plea.

Teammate Angus Sheldrick can also accept a $1000 fine for careless contact with an umpire.

Chol has no case to answer over his tackle on Swans dasher Blakey, which was rewarded with a free kick at the time for holding the ball.

"Blakey has possession of the ball and Chol approaches from behind, tackling Blakey to ground," the AFL said in a statement.

"It was the view of the MRO that Chol did not use excessive force in tackling Blakey and his actions were not unreasonable in the circumstances.

"No further action was taken."

Hawthorn banked a second consecutive win in their 17-point triumph over Sydney, handing the Swans their first loss of the season.
