A bizarre run out has helped Adelaide hand Brisbane their first defeat of the WBBL season, downing the Heat by 59 runs to go second on the ladder.
On the same night that the Melbourne Stars got their season back on track with a seven-run over Perth, Adelaide did well to defend their total of 4-148 at Karen Rolton Oval.
With the Heat battling at 2-31 in reply, big hitter Mignon du Preez was run out for one at the non-striker's end when a Georgia Voll drive was hit straight back at her.
The ball rebounded off du Preez and onto the stumps, before bowler Amanda-Jade Wellington removed the stump from the ground and touched it with the ball with the South African still out of her crease.
Players are able to remove the stump if the bails are already off to effect a run out, however it was questionable if Wellington had done so correctly with the ball in the opposite hand to that which pulled out the stump.
The wicket proved a crucial moment in the game, as Wellington (3-14) had Voll caught-and-bowled next ball for 15.
The leggie also claimed the key wicket of Jess Jonassen later in her spell, deceiving her in flight to have her stumped for 22.
Brisbane were bowled out for 89 in 16 overs, ending their run of four straight wins to start the season.
Wellington's efforts with the ball came after Bridget Patterson hurt the Heat with the bat for the second time in 12 months on Sunday night.
The hero of Adelaide's finals win over the Heat last summer, Patterson struck 70 off 53 to help rescue the Strikers from 3-47 after 10 overs.
Patterson hit seven boundaries and two sixes, including a massive hit off Sarah Glenn back over the spinner's head.
Earlier, Annabel Sutherland's late power hitting and smarts with the ball helped prove the difference as she performed a similar rescue mission against Perth.
After the Stars lost 3-0 midway through their innings at Junction Oval, Sutherland smashed 49 off 27 to help her side recover to 7-154.
Sutherland then took 2-31, including the key wicket of Perth's top-scorer Maddy Darke, to put paid to a late Scorchers fightback and help restrict them to 9-147.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Stars, who had been beaten by Adelaide twice and Brisbane once in the past week and a half.
And much like their other win this season over the Sixers, they had player-of-the-match Sutherland to thank for it.
With the Stars battling to post a competitive total, Sutherland swung the momentum when she hit spinner Lilly Mills for 22 off one over.
Then with Darke giving the Scorchers hope and hitting out in the power surge, Sutherland had her caught on the boundary for 45 off 33.
The allrounder struck again next delivery with a back-of-the-hand slower ball, getting a hard-swinging Lisa Griffith caught at gully for a golden duck.
Spinner Sophie Day also took 4-27 for the Stars, getting the key wickets of Sophie Devine and Amy Jones for nine each to help keep the Scorchers to 9-147.
