A suspected thief was sniffed out by a police dog
Willo, six-year-old German Shepherd was deployed after police were called due to reports of a man breaking into vehicles in the Edge Hill area during the early hours of Monday morning (July 11). An 18-year-old man from Mossley Hill was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted theft of a motor vehicle and has been taken into custody for questioning.
Mersey Police Dogs said there was “no escaping” the police dog’s nose and tweeted: “Good girl Willo.” Willo’s work was praised by others on social media, including Linda Winstanley who said: “Great work gorgeous PD Willo and handler.”

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: “We have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted theft following an incident in Edge Hill in the early hours of this morning, Monday 11 July. At around 12:10am, a call was received of a man attempting to break into a car on Brightgate Close.
“Officers attended and, with the help of our trusty PD Willo, swiftly detained a man on nearby Abney Close.”
It is not the first time Willo has been praised for her work in supporting police officers on Merseyside. Earlier this year, she was able to locate a vulnerable person who was lying in a field after his family told police of their concerns.
Mersey Police Dogs tweeted at the time: “PD Willo managed to pick up the vulnerable persons track and after some distance and time located him laying in a field. He’s now safe and well, and receiving the help he needs.”
In March she also located and detained a wanted violent male who was hiding in a garden in Greasby on the Wirral.
Willo was also in the limelight three years ago for sniffing out two men after they were seen smashing a van window and attempting to break into other cars and houses in Huyton.
