Suspected Lidl shoplifter was escaped prisoner

An escaped prisoner travelled 170 miles before he was stopped by police who believed he was a shoplifter.

Paul Clohessy, of no fixed abode, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Friday via video link from HMP Berwyn. The 36-year-old is serving a six-year prison sentence for possession with intent to supply cocaine and heroin, which began in March 2021.

He failed to return to HMP North Sea Camp in Freiston, Lincolnshire, on Monday, January 16 after being granted temporary release for four days. Iain Criddle, prosecuting, said on January 12, Clohessy was given release to go home and stay at his home address to prepare him for his eventual release, which would have been in 2024.
