Suspected drug dealing on basketball court leads to jail term

Suspicious goings-on on a basketball court prompted police to intervene. And a Henbury man was netted as a result.

Officers spotted what looked like drug dealing at the court outside Proctor House flats on Prewett Street. Inquiries led to a flat in Spencer House were Kimani Thorpe was found with Class A drugs.

Thorpe, 24, of Monsdale Drive, pleaded guilty to obstructing police. He also admitted possessing heroin and cocaine with intent to supply.

The recorder David Chidgey jailed him for three years and nine months. He told Thorpe: "You obstructed a police constable in the execution of his duty and you were also found with heroin and cocaine that could be said that you had intended to supply."

Derek Perry, prosecuting via video link, told Bristol Crown Court police went to the flat in Spencer House in April. When they went in Thorpe tried to push past them and threw a package over a balcony.

Mr Perry said police found a "drugs wrapping station" which included weighing scales, razor blades and bags. Thorpe was found in possession of just over £2,000 as well as 13 wraps of cocaine and nine wraps of heroin.

When interviewed he stayed silent, the court heard. His list of previous convictions includes offences of violence and possessing cannabis.

Tabitha Macfarlane, defending, said her client's life at the time was "chaotic", having lost his job and using drugs. She said Thorpe's loved ones described him as caring, kind-hearted, polite and pleasant.

The court heard Thorpe had expressed deep remorse to his family for what he had done. Whilst on remand he has attained trusted prisoner status.
