During a recent news briefing, US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Markenzy Lapointe, revealed details from the criminal complaint against Ryan Wesley Routh, the suspect in an alleged assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
According to Lapointe, a US Secret Service agent patrolling the golf course perimeter spotted what appeared to be a rifle protruding from the tree line. Upon firing their service weapon towards the rifle, a witness observed a man, later identified as Routh, fleeing the area within the tree line. Routh was subsequently apprehended by law enforcement officers from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in collaboration with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Following Routh's escape, authorities discovered several items in the vicinity, as outlined in the complaint:
- A digital camera
- A backpack
- A loaded SKS-style rifle equipped with a scope. The serial number on the rifle had been tampered with.
- A black plastic bag containing food
