ORLANDO, Fla. — Keith Moses, the 19-year-old man accused of killing three people and injuring two others in Pine Hills last month, is facing additional charges in connection with the shooting spree, according to court records.
The new charges include four counts of shooting at or within a car or dwelling, illegal possession of a firearm and two counts of resisting an officer without violence. He also faces second-degree murder charges in the killing Spectrum News 13 journalist Dylan Lyons, 9-year-old T’Yonna Major and 38-year-old Nathacha Augustin.
Worrell told reporters at a press conference Thursday that she intends to prosecute Moses for first-degree murder, which in Florida can only be formally charged by indictment.
“In order to ... keep Mr. Moses detained, it is necessary for us to file these charges as holding charges at this time,” she said, adding that this case will go before a grand jury “at some point.”
According to court records, Moses fatally shot Augustin on Feb. 22 shortly after he got in a car on Hialeah Street with her and a man who offered Moses a ride.
Moses returned later in the afternoon and shot Spectrum News 13 journalists, killing 24-year-old Lyons and injuring photojournalist Jesse Walden. He then went to a nearby house, where he fatally shot T’Yonna Major, 9, and severely injured her mother, Brandi Major, an arrest affidavit said.
Worrell said her office is “just not there yet” regarding a decision to seek the death penalty. She told reporters that the decision is made after a multi-step process.
If Will Jay, the prosecutor in the case, would like to argue for the death penalty, he will present a memo to an advisory board, Worrell said Thursday. The board’s decision will then cross the state attorney’s desk, and she will make the final determination.
“It is the intention of this office to vigorously prosecute this case,” Worrell said, “to hold the offender accountable for the safety and protection of this community.”
