Authorities have apprehended one of the two suspects accused of impersonating utility workers before the tragic death of a Michigan man. The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was taken into custody in Shreveport, Louisiana, without incident on Saturday.
The arrest is linked to the killing of 72-year-old Hussein Murray from Rochester Hills, Michigan. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Murray's death and the harrowing events that unfolded at his residence.
Murray's wife, who was found tied up with duct tape, managed to call 911 expressing concerns about her husband's safety. She recounted that the suspects had visited their home under the guise of checking for a gas leak. When they returned the following night, Murray escorted them to the basement to investigate further.
Tragically, deputies discovered Murray's lifeless body in the basement, with the cause of death initially unclear due to the severity of his injuries. The Oakland County Medical Examiner later ruled his death as a homicide.
The suspects had posed as DTE Energy workers, as seen in a video released by the sheriff’s office. The investigation is ongoing to determine if any belongings were stolen from the residence during the incident.
DTE Energy expressed condolences to the victims and emphasized their communication protocols for home visits. They urged customers to verify the identity of utility workers before allowing entry into their homes.
The sheriff’s office is seeking information from the public, including videos or details related to the crime. While one suspect is in custody, authorities are actively pursuing the second individual involved in the heinous act.
Sheriff Michael Bouchard urged the community to come forward with any relevant information to aid in the apprehension of the remaining suspect. The cooperation of the public is crucial in ensuring justice is served in this tragic case.
