Susanna Reid condemns Will Smith and say's 'it's not ok to hit somebody' after Oscars slap

Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid has slammed Hollywood actor Will Smith for physically attacking Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards.

The star-studded audience at this year's Oscars were left open-mouthed on Sunday night when Will, 53, stormed the stage and slapped comedian Chris after he joked about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair.

Referring to the actresses buzzcut, Chris joked: "Jada, can't wait for GI Jane 2."

Will - who went on to win Best Actor later in the evening - walked up to the stage and slapped the presenter, before returning to his seat and yelling: "Keep my wife's name out of your f***ing mouth."

The comedian's joke was a reference to the 1997 movie G.I Jane - which starred Demi Moore sporting a buzzcut similar to Jada's.

Jada has previously spoken out about her decision to shave her head, after suffering from alopecia.

However, despite the sensitive topic, Susanna still didn't think it was okay for Will to react in the way he did.

"He doesn't merit a slap. It's not okay, sorry, slapping people is not okay," she said as she hosted the ITV breakfast show alongside Richard Madeley.

Attempting to play devil's advocate, Richard suggested Chris' joke was just a step too far about something that was a very sensitive topic to Jada.

Richard said: "I'm not justifying what he did but I can see why 50 per cent of our viewers think it's okay. We saw a moment of flawed humanity."

Susanna argued: "Also this point about, 'I was defending her'. Yes if she was being assaulted, I understand, but not over a joke.

"If they condone it and say there was a justification for it, they're saying it's alright that if something says something and then gets hurt, it's okay." she added, referring to the Academy.

"We're being very judgemental, I'm not sure what I think," Richard responded as GMB presenter Ranvir Singh waded in and said she hopes her young son doesn't see the footage of the assault.

"I don't think it was the alopecia that made Will do it," Susanna then commented as she mentioned the fact that Will was laughing at the joke initially.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV Hub.
