An upmarket sushi restaurant in Surrey has apologised after sparking a sexism storm by including “sexy black” heels and “form-fitting” tops in its dress code.

Beluga, which opens Friday on Leatherhead High Street, serves £45 caviar and £16 cocktails.

On Thursday it apologised for causing offence for its ‘terms and conditions’ for customers, which suggested women could wear “form-fitting” clothes.

The code, which was later deleted from the website, said: “Dress code is smart casuals with jackets for men, no tracksuits, no t-shirt and women can wear skinny jeans with sexy black ankle-strap heels and with a form-fitting top.

“Alternatively, there are many different types of dresses that would look good at a bar in the summer or winter, namely a midi or bodycon dresses.”

The restaurant expressed its “sincere apologies” over the code, which it said was mistakenly published on their website.

It said: “The description was inappropriate, disrespectful and offensive and does not reflect the image we’re seeking to promote”.

It clarified that the dress code was smart for men and women, and added: “Once again, we are wholeheartedly apologising for any offence and upset that we have caused”.

Restaurant-goers had reacted with outrage over the rules.

Among the comments, one person wrote: “Just read your dress code NO JUST NO! What were you thinking”.

Another added: “Your dress code is appallingly misogynistic. If this is how you treat your customers, I pity your employees. Your antiquated attitude is shocking, disgusting and not welcome.”

A third said: “The 1980’s called, they want their sexist, misogynistic dress code back.”

The venue describes itself as a “modern and elegant” place to “enjoy an evening of fine dining” and cocktails.
