A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a member of staff at the University of Surrey was shot with a crossbow.
Police were called to Manor Park Student Village, Guildford, at around 10am this morning.
A 21-year-old Saudi national, who was a former student at the university, has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in police custody, Surrey Police said.
The University of Surrey said a member of its campus safety team had been “seriously injured”.
A man in his 50s was taken to hospital, police said, with a “significant” emergency services presence remaining in place.
Chief Superintendent Jon Groenen said: “I appreciate that this incident will cause concern amongst our local communities, and I can reassure that we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. We are working closely with the university as our investigation progresses.
“The suspect was detained at the scene shortly after the incident and an investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances of the assault.”
He continued: “The victim remains in a serious condition in hospital and his next of kin are aware and are being supported by officers.”
The University of Surrey said it was giving police its “full support” and that the campus was open and operational.
The victim's next of kin had been informed and were being supported by officers, said Surrey Police.
The force urged witnesses or anyone with information that could help their investigation to come forward.
