A 43-year-old surfer has died after being pulled from the water in distress on Wednesday afternoon, while a second surfer was successfully rescued.

The tragedy happened nearly 200km from Canberra and the victim is yet to be formally identified.

NSW Police said emergency services were called to waters off the Cape St George Lighthouse at Jervis Bay about 1.55pm on Wednesday, May 27, following reports of two surfers in trouble.

The second surfer, a 38-year-old man, was assessed as a precaution by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the nearby Murrays Beach Boat Ramp.

Police have commenced an investigation into the incident, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
