Two Coasts, Two Very Different Waves
Mangaluru and Varkala sit on the same Arabian Sea coastline but produce entirely different surfing conditions. Mangaluru, specifically the stretch around Sasihithlu and Tannirbhavi beaches, gets beach breaks: waves that form over a sandy bottom, break with some unpredictability, and are generally forgiving enough for beginners learning to read water for the first time. The Karnataka coast here faces northwest, which means the southwest monsoon swell from June to September delivers the most consistent surf. Outside that window, October to early November offers a gentler transition period that several surf schools now use as their beginner intake season, when the waves are smaller and the crowds are thinner.
