'Surely' - Man United fans mock Barcelona ahead of Europa League tie after Copa del Rey clash

Manchester United fans have mocked Barcelona after they had to rely on injury time to beat Intercity in the Copa del Rey, a team from the third tier of Spanish football.

The Primera Division RFEF side took the European giants to extra time during their round of 32 clash in the Copa del Rey - the Spanish equivalent of the FA Cup. A hat-trick from 21-year-old Oriol Soldevila Puig cancelled out goals from Ronald Araujo, Ousmane Dembele and Raphinha in normal time.

A 103rd minute strike from Ansu Fati would eventually knock out the third-tier side, but they fought valiantly against a team that featured the likes of Memphis Depay, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Hector Bellerin.

United fans were following the game with keen interest as they are all too aware that their team have to take part in a two-legged Europa League play-off in February to progress to the round of 16. Erik ten Hag's side failed to top their group and knew they were going to come up against one of the eight clubs that finished third in their Champions League group.

United will have to beat Barcelona over two legs if Ten Hag is to emulate the club's success in 2017 - where the Reds beat the Dutchman's former side Ajax in the final. When the draw was made, a mix of excitement and dread crept in, as fans were looking forward to a mouth-watering tie but also cursing their luck at meeting the La Liga giants so early on in the competition.

But Barcelona's close shave against Intercity on Wednesday night gave United fans hope that they can beat the Spanish club over two legs. As the full-time whistle blew, supporters took to social media to poke fun at Xavi's side for conceding three goals to a club that is based in a town with a population of just 20,000 people.
