Surat: Man drives 510 km with 4 kg opium

SURAT: A 50-year-old man drove 510km from Sanchore in Rajasthan to the city on his motorcycle with 4.7kg opium. But his attempt to enter the city on a motorcycle without getting caught failed when a team of Special Operations Group (SOG) caught him at Laskana on Monday. Police recovered opium worth Rs 14.32 lakh from Punmaram Vishnoi.

Vishnoi, a labourer and resident of Puna area in the city, was aware about the high demand of opium among migrants from Rajasthan in the city. However, he was afraid of bringing the contraband in a bus or train. He planned to bring it on a bike from Sanchore.

“He did not stop for long on his way to avoid getting caught and wanted to enter the city at the earliest. The accused had planned to distribute the opium to his customers soon after reaching here,” said a police officer.

The accused wanted to make quick money so he brought opium. Police are now investigating to identify regular customers of Vishnoi.
