The Supreme Court justices will give a first glimpse Thursday of how they intend to handle the Trump administration’s attempt to end birthright citizenship, in oral arguments on cases that could focus more on how the tangled legal challenges play out in federal courts.
The executive order from Trump, signed on the first day of his second term as part of a tough-on-immigration approach, sought to deny citizenship to children born in the United States if their parents were not current citizens or permanent residents.
Challengers have said the policy would deny citizenship to hundreds of thousands of children each year, making them subject to deportation or stateless.
