A development application for affordable housing in Turner has been granted approval.
The site will include three accessible townhouses with supported features for ageing or disabled residents.
Two of the townhouses will have one bedroom each, but a third, larger one will be two-bedrooms.
Each is designed with an internal laundry, open-plan living space and a garage.
A brick facade will give way to internal spaces with dark floors and light-painted walls.
In each backyard, a pergola will open onto a grass, fenced-in area.
The townhouses are adaptable class C, meaning they have all "essential features but not all "desirable features", under ACT planning laws.
Essential features include accessible parking spaces, large bathrooms and ramp access.
Both one-bedroom dwellings will have single garages, however the larger townhouse will provide space for two cars.
An existing, free-standing house on the site will be demolished to make way for the build.
The development will include a number of mature trees around the site, sheltering it from the surrounding street.
The application was lodged in early August and approved two months later.
That approval follows an ACT Labor promise of 1000 extra public and community housing properties over the next six years, should it win the October election.
The public housing commitment is included as part of a broader promise to enable the construction of 5000 affordable rental properties over this time.
But the number of affordable properties in Canberra has declined in recent years despite population growth.
The Productivity Commission showed there were 10,827 public housing properties in Canberra as of June 30, 2023. This was lower than 2018 when there were 11,181 public houses in the territory, the commission's report on government services showed.
