Heading into the Labor Day weekend, the Kentucky Blood Center needs blood. That’s according to spokesman Eric Lindsey, who said they’re “pretty uncomfortable” with supply levels. Lindsay says summer months are typically a low-donation period, and despite good donor responses from ongoing blood drives, they need more.
“This is the first time in a while where we've, we're not at a great point where we have just for whatever reason, the supply is low right now. And it's so when I say it's a little uncomfortable, a little worrisome, it’s because we're going into the holiday weekend.”
Lindsey says holiday weekends tend to produce more accidents that require blood transfusions. Also, the Kentucky Blood Center’s eight donor centers, most of which are in central and eastern Kentucky, will be closed Monday. He said they hope a week-long blood drive at the University of Kentucky’s Gatton Student Center will help.
“The younger demographic is always -- we just don't see as many donations from them. But we've been pleasantly surprised by the response we've gotten from students so far; we're hoping that continues to the rest of the week.”
The UK drive runs through Friday from 10 a-m to 5 p-m and donors will receive a t-shirt and gift cards to Starbucks and the Main Event entertainment center.
