Supplements shown to lower dangerously high cholesterol, according to research

High cholesterol is a well known risk factor for life-threatening illnesses and eating fatty foods can increase the amount of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, which is considered 'bad' for you. This type of cholesterol settles on the inside of arteries, which narrows the passageway for blood, reports the Express.

This, combined with other fatty materials in blood can result in cholesterol sticking to artery walls, which if ruptured could cause serious problems. When fatty material breaks from the wall, a blood clot forms to 'heal' the artery, which can cause a stroke if it blocks bloody supply to the brain.

If the supply of blood to the heart is prevented, meanwhile, a heart attack occurs. Ways to help prevent high cholesterol include a healthy diet and exercise, but research published by ScienceDirect suggests two supplements could prove beneficial to the body too.

It states that omega-3 supplements could help reduce triglycerides and inflammation, which, in turn reduces the risk of cardiovascular problems. Cholesterol charity Heart UK explains that triglycerides are a type of blood fat. "They are our main source of energy and are essential for good health, but if you have too much in your blood, this can raise the risk of heart disease," it said.

Triglycerides are a combination of saturated fats and unsaturated fats, and glycerol – a form of glucose (sugar). Heart UK adds: "If your doctor has asked you to fast for a test (usually for 10-14 hours) then your triglyceride level should be below 1.7mmol/L."

Another potentially beneficial supplement is red yeast rice, which is a traditional Chinese medicinal product produced by fermenting cooked rice kernels alongside a type of soul called Monascaceae. This creates a compound called monacolin K, which has been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol if taken on a daily basis.

The study adds that revealed that monacolin K consumption reduces LDL cholesterols by up to 25 percent over a period of eight weeks.

The NHS suggests eating more oily fish, such as mackerel and salmon, and fruits to lower high cholesterol. Before taking any supplements, it is advisable to speak to a doctor.
