SuperValu have opened applications for small food and drink businesses to enter their unique programme where five winners could have their produce sold in stores across the country for three weeks.
SuperValu have launched The Taste of Local initiative to facilitate smaller food and drinks businesses from the production stage to selling their produce nationwide. The Food Academy programme is part of this initiative.
Food Academy Manager Carmel Biggane said: "Starting your own business can be an overwhelming experience and the Food Academy programme provides the producers with the tools they need to thrive and grow their businesses to their fullest potential."

There are currently five businesses that have successfully completed The Food Academy and will have their products on sale for three weeks in SuperValus across the country from March 2 until March 22.
Speaking about these businesses, Carmel said: "SuperValu are incredibly proud to support growing Irish food and drink producers, it is an important part of our company ethos, and we are delighted that the five producers’ products will now be available to purchase for a limited time period. Each of the producers have such inspiring stories and Supervalu is thrilled to be on this journey with them.”
The Food Academy was established in 2013 and provides over 1,500 jobs across Ireland. A recent survey carried out by SuperValu found that 77% of their shoppers want to buy local and sustainable products.
The five businesses that will be on sale for the next three weeks are:
- Chicory Root Syrup from Homespun, Co. Dublin
- Belgian Chocolate Chip Cookies from West Cork Biscuits, Co. Cork
- Curry Paste from Sing Li Foods, Co. Louth
- Ginger Beer from Zingibeer, Co. Dublin
- Original Gravy from Porter & Nash, Co. Dublin
The deadline for business to put their application forward is April 7 with the programme beginning in September 2023.
