Supermoon: what is it and when is the next one?

A large supermoon is partially hidden by a rocky mountain, the moon appears large and slightly orange.

When is the next supermoon?

The next supermoon will be on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025. It will officially reach its full moon phase at 6:14 p.m. EST (2314 GMT), local moonrise times are dependent on location. This will be the third and final supermoon of 2025.

A supermoon occurs when the full moon coincides with the moon being at the point in its orbit within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, called perigee. This makes the moon appear slightly brighter and closer than usual, though the difference is difficult to notice with the naked eye.
