Supermarket takes back 'most expensive' title after just a week as customers in 'shock' over prices

Morrisons has taken back its unfortunate title of 'most expensive' in our weekly comparison of shopping essentials. Last week we reported how for the first time in six months, it was Tesco working out dearest for our basket of basics, including a two-pint bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken breasts and mince.

But now Morrisons has hiked one of its products once again - the only one to do so this week - increasing its 300g pack of chicken from £2.49 to £2.59, the highest price of all six supermarkets.

It means the shopping bill for Morrisons now comes to £11.57, which is 7p more than Tesco and 46p more than the cheapest supermarket Aldi.

Morrisons has also been facing further criticism this week from shoppers who say they are 'shocked' by some of its prices.

One customer shared a photo of a 550g tub of Bisto reduced salt gravy granules for £5.49 and said: "Went to Morrisons this morning totally shocked at the price."

Hundreds of shoppers commented on the budget Facebook group post, many in agreement.

"Morrisons prices are getting ridiculous," said one. "Now I think they are taking the mickey just don't buy it it. Will then come back down in price," said another.

A third added: "I stopped going to Morrisons ages ago. The prices are ridiculous."

In our weekly comparison, which has been tracking the prices of the same basic items since June, Morrisons has been the most expensive for the last six months, with only last week's result differing when it bettered Tesco.

Throughout the months it's been mostly Lidl in the top spot, but more recently Aldi has swiped that cheapest crown, and maintains that position this week, with an £11.11 bill compared with Lidl's £11.23.

Asda is in third spot at £11.40, followed by Sainsbury's at £11.41 and Tesco at £11.50.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "We are working hard to keep prices down and competitive for our customers while maintaining high standards and availability in all our stores.

"Since December we have invested over £16 million to cut the prices on over 50 per cent of our entry level products to help customers' money go further particularly during the January squeeze."
