Supermarket queues 'worse than Christmas' as shoppers stock up ahead of closure for Queen's funeral

Shoppers are complaining that supermarkets have been rammed due to people rushing to them ahead of tomorrow's closures.

All major UK supermarkets are set to be shut for the day due to the Queen's funeral. Several people in Greater Manchester took to social media to talk about huge queues this afternoon (Sunday September 18) and accuse people of 'panic buying', with others likening the scenes to Christmas Eve.

One tweeter described Tesco Stretford as 'pure chaos', while a shopper in Tesco Prestwich said that customers were "queuing round the shop for the tills".

@milljay9 tweeted: "Just been to @asda for a few bits and couldn't believe the amount of panic buying going on its shut for a day ffs people need to get a grip."

@PrestwichBlue wrote: "In Tesco and it's worse than Xmas. Queuing round the shop for the tills."

@BListAtCapital added: "You’d think all the shops were closing for a week and not just 24hrs judging by the state of Aldi at the moment. It’s giving last minute Christmas Eve trolley dash."

@Tess_invests commented: "With shops closing for an entire day tomorrow, there are absolute SCENES in Aldi (queue akin to Christmas Eve). Give me back those lockdown days of 6 people in a shop at any one time, when even members of the same household were parted."

@sammo1789 said: "Royal funeral panic buying shouldn't have surprised me, but Tesco Stretford is pure chaos."

Meanwhile, @DaveZ_uk poked fun at Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, who were slammed for 'jumping the queue' to see the Queen lying in state. He tweeted: "The supermarket is only closed for one day folks. Queuing the entire aisle on every aisle. Phil and Holly would be all over this queue."
