Supermarket is giving shoppers £5 off when you buy petrol - here's how it works

Asda is offering customers £5 off their next shop when they fill up their car at one of its forecourts.

Shoppers will need to keep their petrol or diesel receipt and show it to a cashier before paying when they next make a purchase in stores.

But there’s a catch - the £5 off can only be used when you spend £40 or more on your next Asda shop.

If you spend any less, even if you bought petrol and diesel, you won't be eligible for the deal.

The offer ends on July 15 but you have until the end of the month to use the £5 off.

The deal is only redeemable in selected stores only - see the full list of places below.

There are also a few items that won't be counted in your minimum £40 spend, including alcohol, lottery, tobacco, e-cigarettes, mobile top ups and gift cards.

You also can’t use it against infant formula, kiosk, opticians, pharmacy, stamps or more petrol.

The deal comes as fuel prices continue to rocket across the UK - causing misery for motorists during the cost of living crisis.

According to latest RAC figures, the average price of petrol now stands at 191.27 per litre, while it's 198.84 per litre for diesel.

The competitions watchdog has today launched an inquiry into rising fuel prices.

The Competitions and Marketing Authority (CMA) acknowledged there were concerns about retailers making profits from the fuel crisis - but said this was not a big contributor to soaring prices.

It found the increase from the crude oil price when it enters refineries to the wholesale price when it leaves them as petrol or diesel has more than tripled in the last year, from 10p per litre to nearly 35p per litre.

It said that retailers' margins "remained about 10p per litre on average" over the same period.

The CMA also attributed record fuel prices to an increase in the cost of crude oil.

CMA general counsel Sarah Cardell said: "The recent rises in pump prices are a major worry for millions of drivers.

"While there is no escaping the global pressures pushing up fuel prices, the growing gap between the oil price and the wholesale price of petrol and diesel is a cause for concern.

"We now need to get to the bottom of whether there are legitimate reasons for this and, if not, what action can be taken to address it.

"On the whole the retail market does seem to be competitive, but there are some areas that warrant further investigation."
