Supergirl release date, cast, trailer and plot speculation: Everything we know about the DCU movie

Milly Alcock as Supergirl.

The Supergirl rollout is well and truly underway, thanks to both a CinemaCon presentation and a new trailer that puts the spotlight on the adorable puppy, Krypto.

We also know David Corenswet's Superman will have a brief part to play in the interstellar DCU Chapter One movie.

While we (im)patiently wait for one of my favorite recent comics in Tom King's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow to be adapted, we have put together a guide on everything you need to know about Supergirl. That includes the release date, cast, plot theories, trailer, and more right here. Read on to learn more about one of the most highly anticipated upcoming DC movies, as well as one of the most exciting upcoming superhero movies.

Supergirl release date

Supergirl will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. This comes almost a year after the release of Superman last July.

Based on the planned release dates for James Gunn's DCU, this means that Supergirl will be the fourth project in Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. We originally thought that Supergirl would hit screens after upcoming series Lanterns, which was eyeing an early 2026 release. But it looks like the schedule has shifted, and the Peacemaker season 2 finale marked the last DCU release until Supergirl.

Supergirl plot speculation

The official plot synopsis for Supergirl (per Variety) reads: "While celebrating her 21st birthday, Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock) travels across the galaxy with Krypto, during which she meets the young Ruthye (Eve Ridley) and goes on a 'murderous quest for revenge'".

The movie is based on Tom King's comic of the same name, and it fits the synopsis quite well – the comic begins with Kara Zor-El traveling across the galaxy to celebrate her 21st birthday with her beloved companion Krypto the Superdog in tow.

On her journey, she meets a young woman named Ruthye who is on her own path of discovery. Ruthye's father has been killed and she wants revenge – and Kara is keen to help her in any way she can. "It’s based on the Tom King book, but it doesn’t follow it religiously, but it has a lot of the core of that there, and I’m really excited for people to see it," Gunn told Variety's Award Circuit podcast in January 2026.

"She's a total mess," James Gunn said about the character. "I mean, I think as we learn, she's had a completely different background from Superman. A much more difficult background. He's had this wonderful upbringing by these two parents that loved him and were very healthy. And her background was much different than that."

Per the brand new trailer, it's also been confirmed that the destruction of Krypton will figure into the movie. Director Craig Gillespie has also confirmed Supergirl will "thoroughly investigate" Krypton.

Supergirl cast

House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock will play Supergirl, Kara Zor-El.

The actor was cast by James Gunn, who said they loved her "edge, grace, and authenticity". In a different interview, Gunn said Alcock as Supergirl "might be the best bit of casting" he's ever done in his "entire life".

"Kara is a complete force to be reckoned with. Milly [Alcock] brings this kind of rock and roll vibe to the character," Gunn said in a behind-the-scenes clip.

Meanwhile, Matthias Schoenaerts will play the movie's big villain, Krem of the Yellow Hills, and Eve Ridley will star as the young girl Supergirl befriends, Ruthye Marye Knoll.

Jason Momoa is set to make his new DCU debut as the comic book character Lobo in Supergirl. The actor previously starred as Aquaman in the DC universe before it was rebooted under James Gunn. However, fans are worried Momoa's Lobo is only a minor character, as his time on set was brief.

It's also been revealed that David Corenswet's Superman will make an appearance in the movie.

Check out the list below of everyone who's been confirmed for the Supergirl cast so far:

  • Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl
  • Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills
  • Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll
  • David Krumholtz as Zor-El
  • Emily Beecham as Supergirl's mother
  • Jason Momoa as Lobo
  • David Corenswet as Superman

Is there a Supergirl trailer?

Yes! The first Supergirl trailer dropped on December 11. Backed by Blondie's 'Call Me', the 2-minute trailer features first looks at the DCU's Krypton, Jason Momoa's Lobo, and plenty of Milly Alcock's Kara Zor-El partying her way around the galaxy.

Another teaser, which was released in January 2026, gave us an even better look at Lobo, as he roars into frame on his space motorcycle and whips out his chain hook. He knows how to make an entrance, that's for sure.

A more substantial second trailer arrived in March and put the focus on Kara's ass-kicking prowess. There's also been a sprinkling of Krypto-centric teasers too.

Lastly, behind-closed-doors footage was shown at CinemaCon (H/T Variety), which lasers in on Kara's dealings with a handful of space pirates. It doesn't end well for them.
