SuperCupNI 2022 Minor final: Surf Select boss proud of history-making side

Surf Select coach Ilias Llambres hailed his history-making players after they won Friday's Minor final at the Coleraine Showgrounds.

The American outfit came from behind to beat Glentoran 3-1 in front of a big crowd on the Ballycastle Road.

The Glens took the lead through Joel Kerr's emphatic finish, but Surf responded with two goals from Cristiano Briceno and a penalty from Mohammad Moustafa.

Llambres's young team becomes the first American club side to lift a trophy at the tournament.

"I am so proud of the team. It is the first time a club team from the USA has won the SuperCupNI," Llambres said.

"It is my first time here and it is really good to win. The boys have been amazing and the tournament has been brilliant.

"We had to show our character once again. We came from behind which we also had to do earlier in the week. So I knew my team could bounce back from the early goal."

Llambres hailed this week's SuperCupNI, saying it had been a "fantastic experience" for his players and coaching staff.

"I am from Puerto Rico, and we have had 16 hours of travel to get here. It has been a great experience for the players," he added.

"All the venues have been good, the logistics have been good and the teams are good.

"My players have felt like professionals this week and it is great experience for the guys, and for me as well.

"Winning this will make the trip home a little bit easier."

Glentoran starred at this week's tournament, beating Leicester City 4-1 in Thursday's semi-finals to tee up their final showdown with Surf Select.

They were starting to dream when Kerr hammered home a superb strike in the fourth minute, but it just wasn't to be for Stephen Lowry's young side.

"I think Surf Select deserved it on the day. They are a very good team," Lowry said.

"They are definitely the best team we have played this week. And they have a massive catchment area of Canada and America.

"We watched a little bit of their games last night and we knew how tough a test it would be.

"We were ahead at 1-0 and our hopes were raised. But then one of our boys got hurt and we were down to 10 men, and they got a goal back.

"That's football, and it was a turning point and Surf Select went on and won."

He added: "This time six or seven weeks ago this team wouldn't have reached the SuperCupNI final. They just weren't ready for it.

"But the hard work they put in got us here, and the lads have matured massively this past week. Deep down I probably didn't expect to reach this final, so we have definitely excelled.

"And the boys have deserved every success this week. We gave a really good account of ourselves.

"They have received silver medals today, but they're not losers' medals. They are second place medals, and to do that at a tournament like this is no mean feat.

"It is one of the biggest competitions in the world, so we have to be proud."
