Supercomputer makes Leeds United future prediction amid tight battle to the end

The weekend's results provided another twist in an unpredictable Premier League relegation battle. For much of Saturday afternoon, Burnley looked like dropping points at Watford, only for the Clarets to come back from 1-0 down to win 2-1. Meanwhile, Everton picked up a surprise victory over Chelsea, whilst Leeds predictably lost to Manchester City. However, Leeds suffered the additional blow of injuries to Stuart Dallas and Liam Cooper, which compounded the Whites' misery.

According to the data analysts at FiveThirtyEight, Leeds are now favourites to go down in 18th place. The algorithm - which works by assigning each team a team rating based on expected goals for and against as well as goals scored and conceded - predicts the Whites to finish a point behind Burnley and Everton.

Jesse Marsch 's side have been given a 45% chance of relegation, with Everton 34% and Burnley 21%. However, before Everton's surprise win this weekend, Leeds were 18% likely to be relegated, with Burnley 29% and Everton on 54%. That should provide encouragement to Leeds that one result can change the picture dramatically.

Everton have a kinder run from this point onwards, but will face Arsenal on the final day and they will be expected to beat Watford. Should they drop any points to the Hornets, they would drop backwards in their predicted results and likely become the favourites to be relegated.

Burnley now have a tougher run of fixtures as they face Aston Villa twice, as well as Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle. Villa have been on a poor run but it's not beyond the realms of possibilities that Burnley could lose all of these fixtures, despite their good form.

The Whites have the most difficult run-in but should know they can still pull of an escape. Should they be able to drag themselves to a couple of wins between now and the end of the season, that would take them to 40 points, enough to save themselves according to the model's predictions.
