Superb PR Sreejesh fails to save India from losing 1-2 against Australia in third hockey Test

NEW DELHI: India faced a heartbreaking 1-2 defeat despite a valiant effort in the third men's hockey Test match against Australia in Perth, resulting in Australia securing an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.

Despite the loss, veteran goalkeeper PR Sreejesh showcased remarkable skills, but unfortunately, his heroic efforts were not enough to secure a victory for India.

The match witnessed a commendable defensive performance from the Indian team, which managed to frustrate the attacking Australian side for a significant part of the game.

India managed to take the lead in the 41st minute through Jugraj Singh's penalty corner conversion, giving them a glimmer of hope. However, Jeremy Hayward's brace in the 44th and 49th minutes dashed India's aspirations of a comeback.

Both Sreejesh and Krishan Bahadur Pathak displayed brilliance under the bar, denying numerous scoring opportunities for Australia, particularly during the first half. Despite Australia's relentless attacks and multiple penalty corners, the Indian defense stood tall, thwarting the host's efforts.

However, a rare defensive lapse from Amit Rohidas resulted in Australia being awarded a penalty stroke, which Hayward duly converted to equalize. Australia seized the opportunity and capitalized on another penalty corner to take the lead, eventually securing their third consecutive victory in the series.

India's attempt to stage a late comeback, including pulling out Sreejesh for an extra field player, proved futile as Australia held on to their lead till the final whistle.

The Indian team displayed resilience and determination throughout the match, but ultimately fell short against the formidable Australian side.

With the series now out of reach, India will look to bounce back in the fourth Test scheduled to take place in Perth on Friday.
